Often times, clients are curious and give me minimal instruction to see what I can come up with. It is intimidating to accept jobs like this, where you are responsible for crafting an image like a shot in the dark. That was the case with this cd cover design. ROCKUS gave me four words to work with: BRIGHT, DAYTIME, MATURE, and ROMANTIC. The rest they left up to me. The approach I take for jobs like this is to make my work reflect an attention to detail. Attention to detail is what makes clients willing to go a greater distance with you, even when you miss the mark. With design, you are more effective as a hire when you are perceived as being useful so don’t let the idea of being perfect keep you from showing quality work ethic.
The question for this cd cover design was how to connect people with the forever feeling of love – a happily ever after? An approach I enjoy, in simplest words, is bringing opposites together and making them play together. I thought about how love can make you feel like flying and falling at the same time. But love, at the same time, doesn’t give you the everything, and you have to work through limitations to make it happen. Using the love between a mermaid and a human, I wanted to place them in a setting that wasn’t in “The Little Mermaid”. A role reversal where he joins her instead of the other way around. She keeps him from sinking and he helps her fly. Both are incomplete in their worlds (hence the scribbles) but making it work.
This was the cover art i created for ROCKUS’ ‘MAKE IT LAST FOREVER’. Flight in the water. Soaring through a mermaid’s version of sky. Sharing the sun. An “above the clouds” feel, underwater.
